Malvern Panalytical

Empyrean

The Malvern Panalytical Empyrean is a multi-purpose X-ray diffractometer. The Empyrean combines X-ray diffraction, scattering, imaging, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy in a single instrument. The Empyrean uses MultiCore Optics to automatically configure the instrument for different measurements without manual intervention.[1]

What is it?

Applications

The Empyrean has been used in superconductivity research to characterize thin-film nickelate materials with X-ray diffraction using Cu Kα₁ radiation. In geoscience, it is employed for analysis of heterogeneous natural materials such as ores. The instrument is also applied to study battery materials, catalysts, and advanced alloys.[3][1]

Frequently asked questions

What measurement techniques does the Empyrean support?

The Empyrean combines X-ray diffraction, X-ray scattering, X-ray imaging, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in a single instrument. Specific techniques include SAXS, WAXS, grazing incidence XRD, pair distribution function analysis, residual strain measurement, microdiffraction, and computed tomography.[1][4]

What is the maximum temperature range for in situ sample stages on the Empyrean?

The Empyrean supports in situ sample stages that operate from -200 °C to 1100 °C (-328 °F to 2012 °F).[4]

What types of X-ray detectors are available for the Empyrean?

The Empyrean uses hybrid pixel detectors including the PIXcel3D and GaliPIX3D, which offer 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D functionality with small pixel size, zero background, and high dynamic range.[1]

What is the X-ray generator power and maximum voltage/current of the Empyrean?

The Empyrean is equipped with a 4 kW X-ray generator with a maximum of 60 kV and 100 mA.[1]

What is the angular reproducibility of the Empyrean goniometer?

The goniometer reproducibility is ≤±0.0001°, and the smallest addressable increment is 0.0001°.[1]
